about

Written, performed and recorded on four track analog tape in The Mustard Room during late november and early december of 2007. Piano parts performed and recorded at Southminster Presbyterian Church.

She asked her faithfully unfaithful if this would all be over soon just like everyone had kept promising. She held the pain close to her heart as a new mother holds her child to her bosom. Her eyes swelled and welled softly into a salty trickle of saline which crookedly found its way to the corner of her mouth.

“I don’t know,” was all he could muster. Never any promises. Never any certainty regarding how either one’s emotions should be swayed by the looming circumstances. “I don’t know.” Together, these three tiny words had come more or less define the path of their existence together. The map they had charted only years ago had been rendered useless as they traveled the relentlessly shifting landscape.

She curled herself up on the sofa and he wrapped a crocheted canary blan- ket around her. Soon after, she fell asleep in his arms. Gently placing her head upon a cushion, he rose to his feet and sprouted a beard. Making his way into the kitchen, he placed a kettle on the stove and began slowly pre- paring himself a cup of steeped spearmint leaves and lemongrass before dusting off his Stratocaster.

In between sips from his tea cup, he would steal a glance at his beloved lying on the sofa still resting her weary body. Then he would take another sip and return to his work, meticulously adjusting microphones, tapes and legions of instruments. Hours later, with each piece carefully in place, he returned to the sofa and cradled the head of his heavy-eyed beloved while silently waiting for these speakers of sound and rhythm to join them in their search for something more concise than “I don’t know”...
